The Gorloks have a balanced rotation, with three starters, totaling over 45 innings. He was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Jordan Smevoll, Bobby Strandt, and Malik Wirges as well as Spalding's Peyton Hood, Michael Newsom, and Jacob Spanyer, and Fontbonne University's Trey Kueper. When the game went into the 12th inning it became tied for the longest game in SLIAC tournament history, joining games from 2006 and 2011. They enter off a three-game sweep of Eureka to close out the regular season and come in with a league-best batting average of .332 this season, averaging 8.5 runs per game, and a 3.23 earned-run average. His single not only drove in the game-winning run but was the 100th hit of his career and would give the Gorloks the SLIAC's first-ever walk-off championship. Lovell and Goodman each had three hits in the game with Lovell being named the SLIAC Tournament MVP.
Elges picked up his ninth win of the season after allowing three hits while striking out one in the final 3.2 innings of the game. Sunday, May 22nd Game 3: #1 Webster vs. #4 Greenville, 4 p.m. A single by Mark Islas brought in the game's first run. A fielder's choice plated another Greenville run and then Austin Lawrence stepped to the plate and drove an outside pitch to the left-centerfield gap, clearing the bases with Lawrence sliding into third for a two-out two-run triple that put Greenville up 4-0. Evan Evola is leading the way with a .446 average, 8 home runs, and 47 RBI. Sam Pinho has seen his time increase towards the end of the regular season and is hitting .404 with 23 hits in just 19 games. The Gorloks will play their first game of the regional on Friday, May 20thagainst Crown (Minn.) College at Lloyd Hopkins Field in Alton, Illinois. The game's first hit did not come until the 3rd inning when David Hidden singled with one out for the Red Devils. The second game of the day will feature College of Wooster (Ohio) and Bethel (Minn.) College. The two teams combined for 29 hits in the game with Michael Newsome leading Spalding with four hits.
The teams went scoreless through the 10th and 11th innings, but in the top of the 12th the Golden Eagles scored a run to put themselves up 5-4 in the contest. The 1-2 punch of Nick Glaser and Gavin Kinworthy have each worked over 60 innings this spring. Austin Mayton has a .343 average while Payton Whitehead and Steven Diaz are each also hitting above .300 this spring. The nightcap of the tournament's first day featured plenty of offense from Greenville and Westminster, combining for 30 runs; the second most runs in tournament history. Spalding looked to even up the score in the next inning and had a chance when they put a runner at second base with one out but then saw the runner erased in a rundown between third base and home for the inning's final out. Landon Mokris is the team's top deep threat, hitting 5 home runs while driving in 36 and batting .326 this spring. Sam Pinhio followed with a single of his own, putting runners at first and second with one out. Eric Bronner followed with a single of his own and a Michael Speck single to center plated the game's opening run. Ryan Bredeson, Parker Brodine, and Trevor Wingard give the team arm depth with each player throwing over 41 innings this spring. Garrett Mathews leads the team with 50 strikeouts in his eight starts while Wesley Clark is 4-1 and Clay Burton has gone 3-3 with a team-low 1.91 earned-run average. Spalding scored in a similar fashion one inning later when Marcus Collins led the 7th off with a walk. This may have been the 12th time in program history Webster University won the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament. Game 3: #1 Webster University vs. #4 Greenville University Spanyer ripped a one-out double in the 8th and Hunter Strong would follow with a two-run home run that gave the Golden Eagles the lead. In quarterfinal action on Tuesday, Spalding came from behind to edge out Eureka 4-1 and Greenville outslugged Westminster 16-14 to move on. The Gorloks defeated the Golden Eagles by a final score of 6-5 in 12 innings to improve to 37-6 on the season and capture their 12th tournament title in program history and their fourth straight. Trent Morrow and Bode Gebbink hold down the rotation, with each throwing over 53 innings. Aaron Blake threw 4 innings of relief to pick up the win, striking out five.
With the win today, the Gorloks have earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball National Tournament for the 15th time in program history. J.T. Peyton Hood has gone 6-3 this spring with a 3.52 earned-run average. Not counting last year when every team made the postseason, this is just the Red Devils' second time making the postseason; joining the 2010 team. Greenville and the loser of tonight's second game will play at 12 p.m. with the winners from Thursday, Webster and the winner of the second game tonight, meeting at 3:30 p.m. After winning their 15th consecutive SLIAC regular-season title the Gorloks will be the top seed in this year's tournament. Greenville broke through on the scoreboard with four runs in the 4th inning. Webster, who had already fought back from a 5-0 deficit earlier in the tournament, would need another rally to take down Spalding. Garard went 6 2/3 innings and limited Spalding to just three hits while Burton went 5 innings and held Eureka to two hits.
However, the Gorloks showed some life in the 5th inning. The remainder of the tournament games will be held at Car Shield Field in O'Fallon, Mo.
